Grand Island Dollars for Scholars
About Us
Dollars for Scholars® is a program of Scholarship America®, is a national network of more than 1,200 grassroots, community-based, volunteer-driven scholarship foundations located throughout the United States. There are chapters in 42 states, as well as seven regional offices around the country that provide support. Founded in 1958, Dollars for Scholars is the longest-standing Scholarship America program. Last year, Dollars for Scholars chapters raised more than $58.3 million, awarded nearly $29 million in scholarships to more than 35,000 students, and invested the remainder primarily in endowment funds for future scholarships.
Scholarship America® is the nation's largest nonprofit, private sector scholarship and educational support organization. It was founded in 1958 in Fall River, MA. by Dr. Irving Fradkin, an optometrist who challenged everyone in his community to give at least one dollar toward sending its youth to college.
Since then, Scholarship America® has distributed more than $1 billion to more than one million students across the country through its Dollars for Scholars® and Scholarship Management Services® programs.
Scholarship America® also administers two of the most important scholarship funds in the nation: The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund®, which raised more than $125 million for scholarships for dependents of those killed and permanently disabled in the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and the Disaster Relief Fund for Post-secondary Education, which has raised more than $5 million for students affected by the 2004 and 2005 hurricanes.
